The carpet is the most powerful interior element. It has the ability to transform any home into a cozy and beautiful place. In fact, the carpet has the same meaning for the floor as the picture for the wall. And here it doesn't matter whether we are talking about a big or a small one, when there is a carpet in the room, it looks complete. Let's analyze everything related to this topic.
Purely functional, the carpet serves two purposes. As we said above, one is to decorate our home. The other important role of the carpet is to protect our feet from the cold as well as to prevent staining of our floor covering. In order to serve us properly, however, it is good to be familiar with the types of matter, as well as their characteristics. Let's look at the most popular carpet fabrics, as well as their advantages and disadvantages.
1. Carpet made of wool. This is undoubtedly one of the best fabrics. It has so many advantages that the disadvantages seem negligible. Wool carpets truly provide their owners with a luxurious experience. They are so sought after not only because they have incredible thermal insulation properties, but also because touching them will provide you with incredible, caressing softness. Whatever color you choose for this carpet, you must be sure that the color of the carpet will remain unchanged for many years. Wool has the ability to absorb water, therefore such a carpet does not burn violently but slowly smolders. Another very important point for all housewives is carpet cleaning. Wool carpets are easy to clean because of the structure of the fibers. From the point of view of the interior, such a carpet looks massive and super expensive, which is where its only drawback comes from, which I can think of, namely, that it is not a cheap such purchase.
2. Cotton carpet. This carpet always likes to be the center of attention. Its quality characteristics are not inferior to carpets made of wool by any indicator. The fame and quality of this natural material is worldwide and unsurpassed. In short, the cotton carpet is very durable and extremely soft. It is easy to wash and does not allow the retention of bacteria and microbes. Also, like wool, cotton is a warm and insulating material, which makes it suitable for tile or natural stone flooring. Its price depends on the quality of the cotton, but it is usually cheaper than the price of wool. If you find a carpet that is a combination of cotton and wool, then you have hit the jackpot. The only drawback here is that this carpet is not suitable for rooms where there is moisture, due to the low absorption of the material.
3. For lovers of the extravagant, we have also included a genuine leather carpet. Most of us have been on vacation in a cabin in the woods and seen carpets made from natural animal skin. Apart from the fact that I in no way support the killing of animals for this purpose, we must say a few words about this matter. These products are soft and easy to clean. You can rarely find two identical carpets, which makes them unique and unrepeatable. It has good thermal insulation properties, but moisture can destroy the leather carpet very quickly. Another disadvantage is its high price.
4. The problem with moisture is solved with the carpet made of polyester. It is an artificial material that aims to eliminate the shortcomings of natural materials. They are resistant to mold and moisture. They are extremely resistant to wear and only one pass with a vacuum cleaner is enough to be cleaned well. Here the variety of colors is huge, because artificial materials are processed very easily. Its price is the lowest and therefore it is the most common carpet on the market. Of course, artificial remains artificial and in no way do I prefer it to natural carpets.
5. If you are a fan of smooth surfaces, then pay attention to carpets made of viscose. Touching such a carpet is like touching real silk. We have special cellulose fibers to thank for that. This model is hypoallergenic and antistatic. The most appropriate place for this carpet is not in the kitchen, because if you are clumsy and accidentally spill coffee or wine, they will absorb very quickly into this material and removing the stains will be extremely difficult. In general, there are no flaws here at all. We can also add to the list the fact that moisture does not have a good effect on the viscose carpet, as well as the high price.
6. If you like bright and colorful carpets, you should know that there is no better choice than carpets made of acrylic. This material is unsurpassed in its ability to absorb any color and keep it in the core of the niches for a long time. At the same time, once treated with color, it is difficult to be stained with it otherwise. It's just that stubborn stains have no chance against this material. To the touch, this carpet resembles wool. Pleasant to the touch and easy to clean make it more and more popular among users. There are, of course, many more types of carpets, but these are the most widespread. Now that we have understood the difference between each fabric, it is time to move on to the essential part.
What size carpet should we choose?
First of all, we must take into account the interior of the room, because the carpet is a finishing element, not a beginning. To look good in the room, it must be the right size and color. To determine the correct size, we need to measure the space in which we sit, sleep, eat, etc. If the space is small, choose a small carpet. If there is a table above the carpet, the rule is that all the legs of the coffee table must step on the carpet. At the same time, the length of the carpet should be about 10-20 cm longer than the length of the sofa. For a well-balanced look in the living room, the sofa or armchairs should "stick out" about 10 cm from the carpet or not step on the carpet, i.e. only the coffee table should be on it. The image below shows the best size for carpet in the living room.
If you are going to choose a size for a floor covering in the dining room, then the following two options are the most correct. It is important that the table and all the chairs step on it. You must, of course, provide space when you pull the chairs back, because in this position it is also correct for them to step on the carpet.
There are also two options in the bedroom. The first option is painfully familiar to all of us. Surrounding the bedroom with small carpets, but it is worth considering a larger option. Place a carpet, leaving a part of the bedroom without a carpet under it. This way you will create a really elegant and cozy look. (Here I just want to insert that small carpets are also suitable for indoor stairs. )
What color carpet should we choose? I can't answer this question unequivocally, but I can tell you what to consider when choosing a color.
1. A carpet can match the walls in the room. (wallpaper or paint) It can be the same color or at least a similar color. However, you should be careful not to overwhelm the look of the room with too much color. I give you examples below.
(I've been looking for a red carpet for a long time to match these wallpapers with black floral elements.)
2. Do not forget about curtains. They can also help you with the difficult task of matching your carpet correctly.
3. Furniture is also an important part of the team. However, the carpet here can resemble the color of the furniture, but not the same as them, because this will merge the whole space and will not look good. You can experiment here with some contrasting colors, such as a black sofa and table and a white carpet. Choose carefully and wisely!
Another important topic that we need to touch on is the cleaning of the carpet.
If the carpet is not very dirty, cleaning is done with a regular vacuum cleaner. However, if there are stubborn stains and dirt, you will need a stronger friend in the fight. There are thousands of products and preparations on the market that promise quick and easy cleaning. Of course, this is not always true. First of all, carpet cleaners are extremely foamy and have a pleasant smell, but they are usually harmful to the family and children who often play on the floor.
As a fan of natural and personally prepared preparations, I will give you a few ideas how to deal with stains and dirt at home with home remedies.
1. For wet cleaning, you can try the following mixture. 1 tablespoon of ammonia is diluted with 500 ml of water. Dip a rag in the mixture and gently wipe away the dirt. The effect is really good!
To give new life to your carpet, you can use another recipe. To 500 ml of water, add 50 ml of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of soda and 1 tablespoon of ordinary washing powder. Rub the stain or area that is heavily soiled well. The effect is striking.
Whatever method you use for wet cleaning, you should know that the water should not be hot. Always use a brush that is medium soft. Never with stiff bristles. And last but not least, you should always brush in the direction of the carpet threads.
2. For dry cleaning, use only salt or baking soda. It is enough to sprinkle on the contaminated areas, rub for 2-3 minutes and then wait another 10 minutes for it to take effect. Then you go with the vacuum cleaner and the carpet becomes like new.
I will also share with you some more interesting cleaning ideas.
If you happen to find wax stains on the carpet, the easiest way to remove them is with an ice cube. Place it on the wax for about 1 min and then remove. You would achieve the same effect with an iron. Put some waste rag on the wax stain and start ironing it like you iron your clothes. The wax will melt and soak into the cloth.
There are also a number of pests that we sometimes find difficult to get rid of, such as beetles or moths, which love to inhabit our carpets. Carpet beetles are best treated with water that is at least 60 degrees, but you run the risk of ruining the color or structure of the carpet, so you might try to remove these pests with boric acid. Moths do not tolerate the mixture of lavender oil and water. You can spray the entire carpet with this homemade solution. Vacuum and throw the bag away afterwards, as their eggs will most likely be there.
